Trans-thoracic Vertebrectomy and/or Discectomy with and without a fusion

This procedure is reserved for tumors and discs that compress the thoracic spinal cord from the front. They require a more complex approach via an incision on the side of the chest, between the ribs and a partial temporary collapse of the lung to gain access to the offending vertebral tumor or disc.

Once removed, if the vertebral column is unstable an artificial vertebra is inserted and supplemented by a stabilizing plate. The lung is reinflated after the surgery by a special type of negative pressure drain. These procedures are safe, but do require 3-5 days of hospitalization, with closer postoperative monitoring.
