Suboccipital craniotomy, with or without a fusion

This procedure is performed for obstructions like Arnold -Chiari malformations, or tumors at the cranio-cervical junction. The back of the base of the skull is removed, sometimes together with the back parts (laminae) of the first and second vertebrae.

The covering or the brain, the dura, is opened and the offending obstruction is released. The Dural covering is enlarged with a graft, and occasionally if the skull’s connection with the spine is compromised, a fusion is required. The procedure is very safe but does require about 3 days of hospitalization.
