Posterior cervical laminectomies, with or without fusion

This procedure is generally performed for spinal stenosis, but can also be the first stage in a tumor resection. The stenosis narrows the central canal and can gradually lead to a crushing of the spinal cord with subsequent paralysis. To avoid this, the back part of the vertebrae, the laminae, are removed.

This expands the canal and decompresses the spinal cord, allowing it to be perfused and thus function normally. The procedure is safe and quick but does usually require 1-3 days of hospitalization due to neck muscular discomfort after surgery. Occasionally a posterior fusion is required to stabilize the neck and prevent it from collapsing forward.
