Lumbar laminectomy, discectomy with and without fusion

This is a procedure to remove tumors or alleviate the stenosis of the lumbo-sacral nerves (the spinal cord ends at the first lumbar level). When compressed these nerves cause pain, numbness, weakness or paralysis and bladder and bowel incontinence. The removal of the back part of the vertebrae (the laminae) releases the nerve compression. Often an accompanied removal of part or all the underlying herniated disc is required. When the stability of the vertebral column is compromised, especially if a deformity already exists (spondylolisthesis, kyphosis, scoliosis) a fusion is required.

The fusion can involve the transplanting of patients own bone to the lateral parts of the spine for gradual consolidation, or can more often involve the introduction of artificial disc grafts, and titanium rods to immobilize the spine. A laminectomy without a fusion is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in same day surgery, whereas a fusion procedure requires 1-4 days of hospitalization depending on extent and the number of levels fused. These procedures are very safe and very well tolerated with a high degree of success.
